Monday, Oct. 3rd:
Official student count day

Fundraiser Award: Rock Climbing with Cody
Wellness Class 4:15 (Zumba)

* Note about the rock climbing with Cody. This will impact the top sellers and you will receive an email with student names. Intermediate students will be meeting at the office at 9:00 a.m. and leaving for outdoor rock climbing at Castlewood Canyon. They won't return until 2:00 p.m. Primary students will be joining Cody in our gym at 3:30 p.m until 6:30 Wednesday afternoon. Parents of all children have been contacted through the office. If parents approach you with questions, please direct them to the office.

Thursday, Oct. 6th:
Mary's Crew to Molly Kathleen Mine (field work)

Friday, Oct. 7th:
We DO have students this day (Be sure to remind parents)
5th grade to Castlewood Canyon (hike & field work)
Skip to the parking lot at the end of the day :)

System Tweak:

The notices that go out to teachers informing you at the end of the day that there has been a change in plans for a student's routine has been a challenge. To ensure that you do get the information, someone from the office will hand deliver the notice to you. Literally hand it to you. I know that can be an interruption.

In addition, when parents arrive before the end of the day to pick up students, the office has been calling the classroom to ask you to send the student to the front office. We are changing that. We will ask parents to sign in and then come to the classroom and pick up the student. Again, I know this can be a disruption. However, so are the phone calls!
Let's try this and see if it works.

Thursday Folder change: I've asked Andrea to create an email for you to forward instead of adding attachments to  your email. I asked her to do this because some attachments are not easy to identify their purpose from their title. I'm hoping the brief blurb will better help parents identify what is meaningful to them. All you need to do is forward this email from Andrea on to your parents. Thanks!

Calendar/Delayed Start changes from district level:
The school board made some changes to our school calendar in the month of March. It didn't impact us much because we'd made changes already...but in a nut shell....a copy of the latest and newest Renaissance calendar will be in your mailbox and on our school website. Throw the old one away!

Also, and this is a BIG also, the district made a shift: All delayed starts (ie. due to snow) will be 90 minutes this year.  That means, the bell will ring at 10:00 a.m. for students. Teachers are expected to be at school at the regular start time. Know that big snows, bad weather will impact the commute you all make and I am sensitive to that challenge. We will need to change the delayed start IA schedule (groan...).

Staying Sane:
The district has created a partnership with Horizon Health. This partnership will provide you access to some mental health service for free! It is my understanding that you are entitled to 10 free mental health visits per issue. So, if you have 25 students you have 250 visits! Add in a spouse, a child, a friend, a parent, personal issues.... you could go everyday! The counseling surrounds things like: stress management, balancing work and family, parenting skills, healthy marriages, managing finances,...even pet care! Look for a brochure in your mailbox.

A Peek Into Classrooms:

Here's....Bill!
Watch the brief video and find out the title of his case study!

Learning Targets

Drawing connections between gallery walk
and what they were reading.

Bill shakin' it up!

Bill was using parent volunteers and said, "I owe Rebecca a thank you for sharing her idea with me for using parents at each science experiment station. It's working really, really well!"

Neil dining with a student.
It's all about relationships and Neil knows it!

Students are jazzed about their Google accounts!
Noreene has been helping teachers get this set up with students.
Ask Lisa, Josh and Rebecca about how they are using this with
their students.

Mary Sue has Ipads in the hands of students.
Ask Mary Sue how she managed rolling them out
with students.
I could hardly get Mary Sue's students to stop and talk to me!
There will be some time this coming Wednesday during our Professional Development time together for sharing what people are doing and learning more about using Ipads with students.

Josie asks Jack if he can help her check her email.  LOL :)
We've all come so far in such a short amount of time!

Bill works his magic with the 2/3 Discovery students.

Four kindergarten students
help Kathy with concepts about print.

Hanni supports her growing readers during
a Guided Reading group.

Sharing:
I'm sharing an email I got from Jill, as it serves as a good reminder about the the 'balance' in the 'Balanced Assessment' work we did on Friday last week:

Here is a link to a podcast by Franki Sibberson and Kathy Collins. Kathy Collins is the author of Growing Readers (one of the books we use to teach reading). I loved that this podcast talked about how important it is to know more about your students than just their test data. She gave examples of how to use their strengths in one area to help in another area. She talked about the importance of seeing kids as people not just numbers. (She does agree that we need test data but just that we can't stop there.) Very inspirational - it gave me a much needed lift this morning.

Josh found an expert speaker for the 6th grade Expedition while hiking a 14teener! The 6th grade teachers were vibrating with excitement about the fantastic learning experience this expert brought to their students! Keep hiking Josh!

Celebration!
"Congratulations!  Your school has been selected as a Finalist in the
2011-2012 Champion Creatively Alive Children Grant Program."

This summer Pam spent put a great deal of energy into writing a grant offered by Crayola to fund some of her awesome, creative ideas. Well...she won! Once she's completed some additional paperwork for Crayola we'll be able to move forward sharing the good news with our community. Yeah Pam!
Pam will share the details with us soon!

Great aspirations:

Josh told me he is working on establishing boundaries to balance work responsibilities and still have a life. How's that going Josh? Please share the tips you are learning with us!
Jill sent me an email that might get us started - thanks for sharing Jill!

Jill writes: "As I am decompressing after today, I found this blog post. It is about how to settle into a new school year while still having some balance in your life."

An excerpt from this article:
Maybe you’re reaching for some Advil by 3:30 because you’ve been using so much redirecting language your neurons need their own redirecting. It’s a good thing that you invested the time in modeling how to take a break and benefit from quiet time, because they each need it. In addition to teaching, you’re also writing newsletters, calling parents, preparing curriculum, attending meetings, skipping lunch, a workout or just making your own bed.  Your to-do,list(s) haunt you at night and keep you on the move all day. It’s the end of September.

The article lists 6 great tips for finding some balance!! Well worth the read.

Love and Logic:

Thanks Pam for facilitating the Love and Logic 9 Essential Skills for the Classroom!  The group has covered 4 of the essential skills and I'll give an over view of each of the 9 Essential Skills, one at a time, in Friday Flash to serve as a reminder for all of us! If you missed out, connect with Pam because I'm sure you can join the group at anytime even if you missed some of the earlier sessions. Maybe we can twist Pam's arm and she'll offer another round later in the year!

Skill #1 in the 9 Essential Skills is Neutralizing arguing.
Step One: Go Brain Dead

Step Two: Choose a Love and Logic "one-liner" antidote:
Choose from:
*I respect you too much to argue" or
"I bet it feels that way" or
 "I know"
 "How sad"
 "Nice try"
 "Thanks for noticing that"
 "What a bummer"
 "Could be"
"That's one way of looking at it"
then...redirect

Step 3:  Do Not Attempt to Think
Become a broken record, repeating your one-liner. Allow any frustration to be that of the child, not of you.

Step 4: If the child continues to argue
It is effective to say, "I argue at 12:15 or 4:15 daily. What would be best for you?" Then play the broken record with the question. Don't give into temptation to match wits with a child.

Reminder:
Please remember to sign up for your pre-conference, observation and post conference. If you need any assistance see Julie, Andrea or myself.
Thanks for inputting your goals into Halogen!

Feedback:
Should you have feedback for me about this blog I am open, open, open! I desire this blog to be a useful communication tool, connect us and hopefully inspirational from time to time. Please share your suggestions and impressions with me when you have them.

Quotes from kids:

"Crew means your family during the day."
-Zac Conti (first grader)

Thoughts to Ponder:

"The trick is what one emphasizes.
We either make ourselves miserable
or we make ourselves strong.
The amount of work is the same..."
- Carlos Castaneda

September 23, 2011

I am a big fan of fall and it definitely feels like it is here.
Our Superintendent says the  following drinks at Starbucks are a fall inspiration (haven't tried one myself, but hear good things!) Salted Carmel Mocha and Pumpkin Spice Latte. Treat yourself to one soon!

Appreciate you so much!

Today is a professional development session and it will be good to sit with one another for the morning! Today we will spend a little time thinking about what we know and apply about assessment. We will take our first steps towards our Unified Improvement Plan goals: defining expectations of writers.
We will start at 8:20 in the library. We'll break for lunch at 12:00 or 12:30 and then you will have the afternoon to collaborate/plan/work on your tech skills and/or meditate.
You decide!
I hope today you will come away with some new thinking,
a little further down the road with defining your own personal expectations of your writers
and connecting with colleagues.

EPR information:

David Ray is the the new Chief Academic Officer.

Our Curriculum and Instruction Coordinators developed the Bridge Document to make the Colorado Academic Standards more accessible to elementary teachers and to make the alignment more concrete with the EPR statements.  The Bridge Document translates the information found on the Colorado Academic Standards templates to more teacher-friendly language and condenses it to fit on fewer pages.   As you look at the documents you will see that the EPR statement is the heading of each column, and below that is the condensed language from the Evidence Outcomes of the Colorado Academic Standards.

Again, this is just a support document and there is no expectation that its use be mandated.  It could be used to help teachers prepare for parent conferences or to help grade level teams quickly capture the essence of the Colorado Academic Standards.  Its use is optional, and only intended to provide teachers with a support tool (i.e. to support them in having meaningful conversations with parents about student learning).

We outlined other potential uses of the Bridge Document in a webinar.  This webinar (approximately 15 minutes long) and PowerPoint was archived with our other EPR resources.

(Look for 2011-12 Updates).  On this page look for the grade level links:  XBooklet and Bridge Document.  The grade level booklet contains all the detailed Evidence Outcomes for the Colorado Academic Standards.  Scroll down to the bottom and you will find the bridge documents. Log in as a guest, and enter your name and school.

Calendar change reminder in October:
With our No student contact day due to our Professional Development session on Friday, September 23rd behind us (well almost!), this is a good time to remind your parents that it could be confusing when they are looking at the school calendar on Friday, October 7th. It is important that they refer to the Renaissance calendar as the district modified calendar shows that students should NOT come to school on October 7th. As a school, we made a shift and students SHOULD come to school on October 7th and NOT come to school on Monday, October 24th just following Fall Break. I suspect parents will need several reminders about this. We made this shift as we collectively decided that there wasn't much power in a professional development day just as we were leaving school for a two week break. Having our professional development day just as we return allows for greater application of any professional development we do and also allows us to provide a strong start coming back from a break.

Do you need a 10 minute coffee break sometimes? Need to go lay on the couch in the lounge?
I would relish the opportunity to be a guest reader in your classroom if you find you have a place where I might fit on some given day. Shoot me an email if an opportunity becomes available. If emailing would involve planning, please just send a student runner with an S.O.S.! You might also let me know if you are engaged in a genre study and I'll try to have a book that fits.

A peek into classrooms:
Expert Speaker: William Brecken visits
the third grade.
No...it's our adorable Noreene!

Lauren and her crew doing field work at Bent's Old Fort.

Diana...looking for a romance novel for the weekend.
Thanks Diana for all the support you give teachers and kids in finding just the right books!
Mary Beth braces herself on the desks of her students so she doesn't fall over from exhaustion from the constant dashing about the room to meet the needs of 28 first graders! She did have 29!

Students in Jill's class write their hopes and dreams.
I think Peyton got her wish!
Jill reading Elephant and Piggy
A new series her class is loving.
Check below for the Youtube link to another favorite book
and how Jill and Mary Beth are using it in their genre study.

Can you tell her students love it?!

Jill and Mary Beth are doing a genre study of pattern books. Here is a video of 'Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes' that has the kids fired up as writers! Stop by first grade and take a look at the books the kids have written! (We'll all be singing this song and doing the dance!) A testimony to the power of mentor texts and genre studies!!

Link to a  'A Year of Reading' a blog with a list of 'Books I Could Read a Million Times':

Here's a video clip of Linda in action. She's using Mini-Story time as a tool for learning and this mini-story is James and the Giant Peach.

Did you know that Eric has been working very hard on his backyard and has just finished installing astro-turf?! Take a look...

Before

After!
I think we have an expert landscaper in our midst!
Absolutely gorgeous Eric! Bravo!

Last year Pedro told Lisa and Debbie that once Angel was able to come home, he would bring him in to one of our staff meetings and hold him up the way Mufasa held Simba up in the Lion King.

Thoughts to ponder:

When we teach, belief and disbelief sit side by side. To play the believing game, we need to know both the child and the process.

Margaret Wheatley states that what people need is good solid feedback, not measurement.

Stand by the things you do well,
be true to your own vision of excellence.

September 18, 2011

The purpose of the Friday Flash is to serve as a weekly staff memo to everyone at Renaissance to keep communication flowing, share celebrations, organization and system updates, logistics of events, staff development plans, some inspiration and community building.

I'm off schedule sending this to you on a Sunday evening, but I was eager to get started. Normally, I will send you an email with a link to this blog on Friday mornings. I decided to use a blog rather than a paper memo as it allows me to share so much more and will have old posts you can check back on for information.

Thanks so much for all your efforts in supporting 'Bootcamp'. I know that when we add something to our already packed schedule it is a strain. It was incredible that our community raised $25,000.!!!
REA is being responsive to the community feedback from last year and we will only have two formal fundraisers this year -' Bootcamp' and 'Life is Art' in April. We will continue to collect box tops and sell Script cards to King Soopers. I will be sending an  email to all of you and our community  communicating how the funds would be allocated from our fundraiser.

Calendar for the next two weeks:
(Be patient with me for awhile as I get all the calendars in sync. I may make a few errors...)
Week of September 19:
Tuesday, Sept. 20: Lindsey's Crew Fall Voyage to Educo
Wednesday, Sept. 21: New Parent Orientation
                                       Technology Professional Development
Thursday, Sept. 22: Admin. meetings for me all day
Friday, Sept. 23: District schedule teacher Professional Development day - No Students
We will start at 8:30 in the library and be together all day :)
*Prizes for everyone who can recite, by heart, their 5 top strengths

Week of September 26 - 30th:
Monday, Sept. 26: Picture re-take day
Wednesday, Sept. 28: All School Meeting
                                   Technology Professional Development
Friday, Sept. 30: Faculty Gathering (see Hanni for details)

I ran into this video last night when I was using my Google Reader and looking at blogs. This video was featured on We Ain't Got No Fear Of Technology!
http://web20classroom.blogspot.com/2011/09/we-aint-got-no-fear-of-technology.html

I laughed and laughed. Laughing mostly at myself...this could be me! No doubt we have all been up against a personal learning curve to keep up with the technology available to us. What a celebration that everyone is finding that new learning so valuable and fun! How fortunate our tech team/ teacher leaders lead the way and support us on our Wednesday Technology Professional Development days.

Upcoming information:
Please be sure to take a look at the Observation calendar and plug in your pre-observation, observation and post-observation on that calendar.
(I just got feedback that the calendar won't allow others to write on it. Grrr. I 'thought' I set the settings correctly, so will get that done on Monday.)
The calendar presently only goes until we break for the Christmas holiday. (Why does that not seem all that far away?)

A peek into classrooms:
(Featuring just a few each week)
Does anyone have the picture of Pedro with his little boy?

Jody produces her own Wild Kingdom show using her document camera! Thanks Jody for coming to get me so I wouldn't miss this gruesome experience!

Preying mantis eats a grasshopper in kindergarten.
Josh returns a 'happy camper' from his Voyage. I think Neil was hiding from me??
Lindsey heads out this week and then we will have completed all Fall Voyages! W00-HOO!
Thanks each and every one of you for the personal sacrifices you make to support these amazing experiences for kids!!
Each and every voyage has been a success. I think we are going to return to Camp Elim for second and third grade voyages. Camp Ida Ra Ha Je left us all unimpressed.

Team building in  PE

Literature discussion
Conferring with writer's in Historical Fiction genre study.

One of the 'Fluency Queen' winners! Did you get asked to listen to a student read a poem from Ms. Lindsey's crew?
Look at all the student's in Lindsey's crew who want to share a powerful piece of their writing! They are using Patricia Polacco's, Thunder Cake, as a mentor text for their writing.

Working on Dream Catcher's in Art. They are gorgeous!

I was walking down the hall and spotted Peyton and Daisy reading the  "I Am From" poems created by Josh's sixth grade students. Daisy was busy writing a response to the authors. What a great idea for sharing writing, providing an authentic audience, and getting feedback for writers!

Okay...that's all for this week's Friday Flash!
Thought to ponder:
"Children feel their way through learning more than they think their way through it."

What's your list of five most important books?
