Challenge By Choice

I have been reflecting back on something Ramona (facilitator from  Responsive Classroom) challenged us to do. Remember, she said to write down all the students names in your classroom quickly - from your head?  Doing this helps us recognize if there is a student or two in our classroom that we need to spend more time getting to know.

Challenge One:

Try it right now.

Did all those names come quickly?

Did you miss someone? I challenge you to be intentional about noticing this student and watching them more.

If yes, are there still a few students you don't know enough about? What do you need to know? Make a plan to find out.

Challenge Two:

This week I spent a bit of time with Lauren. She had skads of information about her students laid out on the table and was animated in our conversation sharing all that she's learned and how grateful she is that she has completed her formal and informal collection of information and sighed with relief that she can now concentrate on instruction. She even noticed that kids had progressed with no formal instruction from her!

I smiled to myself. This was perfect. We should be gathering lots and lots of information. We should be looking at it. We should wonder and then go find out more. We should expose kids to more than we think they might be able to do to see what they'll do with that. Were we even right that it was too hard? Was something we thought was easy, actually hard? Are we asking all kids questions, or are we basing our hunches on our high responders? Are we 'cold calling' intentionally to gather information? Ultimately, are we feeling like we have more than enough information to know where to begin to teach? We should be chomping at the bit to teach because we know just where to begin. Bravo Lauren!

Let's shift our thinking away from thinking that gathering all this initial information about students is slowing us down. It's exactly the information we need in order to target the zone of proximal development of our students. We must know what they control (are independent) and what they are on the verge of knowing - that could become within their control with just a little nudge from our teaching. This is what accelerates learning.

If you have been telling yourself that you have been too busy to look at the results of your iReady data, your writing assessments, your conferences, listen to your readers, talk with students, watch them wrestle with problem solving - because you are too busy planning for instruction - then I challenge you to stop. Look at this information. Shift your plan for a day or two, of course you'll still have students immersed in meaningful experiences  (how else would you find out?)- but your purpose is shifted to watch/interact and learn where your students are independent and what they are on the verge of doing independently.

Ha! And you thought I was going to talk about Adventure Education!

If I've confused you .... come visit with me!

 Wednesday, September 7th Professional Development

Our professional development session on September 7th will be an opportunity for us to all come together as a group. We will revisit our mission statement to ground ourselves in our unified vision for what we want for our kids. If you have done some work with the mission statement with your kids this year, we always love to hear what others are trying!

We took a HUGE risk last year leaving the framework we'd used for years for our Showcases! It was scary to put ourselves out there being so unsure of whether it could work. Of course it did! We did it together! To quote our beloved Noreene, "The work will teach us how." And it did. So on Wednesday,
we will then spend some time reflecting on how our Showcases went in May. Take the time before Wednesday to jot down some of your thoughts. We will want to identify what went well, what changes we all think need to be made and be strategic for this year. This conversation will also be enormously helpful to our new staff to understand this unique experience we provide our students.

We will wrap up having a discussion about Student-Led Conferences. In our quest to have a unified approach as a school; share language that means the same thing to each of us, have a shared purpose and vision - we need to unpack this ritual. It won't be long until it's time to conduct Student-Led Conferences, and this time together will set the stage.

I know that many of us need time to ponder and think in depth prior to a conversation. I hope I've explained it well enough that you have the clarity you need to do the prior thinking. If not, please let me know and we can talk together prior to Wednesday.

August 19, 2016

I absolutely love to see the sharing that lives in our community. I see it when people run across a great idea, resource, inspiration, article, blog, podcast, Ted Talk...and send it out to others. Sometimes the sharing happens in conversation and sometimes in print. What a celebration that we work to inspire one another!

We just finished up our first shared experience with our school-wide writing assessment. The purpose keeps resonating with me: To use the expertise, the multiple perspectives, and experience that lives in our teaching community to learn from one another. The absolute best way to become better, is to do it together.

Thanks Pam, for sharing the following excerpt with me - I found it so inspiring!
Variations on a Blue Guitar: The Lincoln Center Institute Lectures on Aesthetic Education  highlighting the following:
"...I keep reminding people (myself, as well as some of you) that teachers have their own crafts, their own repertoires, their own modes of artistry, even though they cannot call themselves practicing artists. But, like the choreographers and directors and musicians and visual artists you work with here, you also have a life project, a way of being in the world through which and by means of which you define yourself as a person. That project is teaching, and if you are like me, it is a lifelong quest, a lifelong project. Like the artists, we are always in process, always exploring our texts, our raw materials, always seeking ways of reaching others and moving others to come alive, to think about their thinking, to create meanings, to transform their lived worlds..."

For CERTIFIED Staff

Our time together is precious, and it is an expectation that we review the evaluation process. To preserve our time together for collaboration and learning, I'm sharing the CITE evaluation guide here. Please read and review it and if you have questions please come see me and we can review it together.
When you have completed reviewing the guide and have all your questions answered, please click on the link for the acknowledgement form - and submit it. Central office is keeping track of this and we need to have it completed asap. Thanks!

CITE Evaluation Guide

Acknowledgement form - CITE process

Your next steps in the process that you need to complete:
# Log in to InspirEd and select your rubric (generalist)
#2: Complete the BOY (beginning of year) self-evaluation
#3: Create Goal for 2016-2017 school year -
To streamline this process, the Leadership Team will construct a school-wide goal, write it so that it will be a SMART goal to meet the requirements of the goal setting process. We are meeting Friday, and will get this to you at the completion of our meeting so you can use it to complete your goal setting requirement.
*Important note: You can absolutely write your own goal, or tailor the goal we share with you, to better personalize it for your own next steps. When I meet with folks on our every 2 week cycles, we can look at your goals together.

Voices from the Past

What could be more inspiring as we make the passage into a new year, than the words from students we have touched?

The cairn was left by a former student - so perfect at so many levels -  a heap of stones piled up as a memorial and a landmark. Reveals so much of how the experience here at Renaissance shaped the young man who left it.

The visitor post - an unsolicited testimony of appreciation and gratitude for how her life has been enriched by her time at Renaissance.

Our students take the experiences, shaped over years, and are letting us know we do deliver on our mission.

Nothing like a celebration to start our year off together.

...and the journey begins

Can I just say....Nooooo!

Welcome Melissa!
Melissa will be with us all year,

Savor the Sweetness

Take just a minute as you begin a day, or as you sit back to do your read aloud - pause on purpose. Look at those students before you. Really look at them. Gazing back at you are not the children who sat before you in August. They are connected to you. They are independent. They have grown. You have laughed together. You have struggled together. You've shared fun days and challenging days. Everything you've put into the journey has made a difference. It's right in front of you. Look at it. Delight in it. Celebrate it in that minute.

It''s essential right now, that your focus is on the celebration. It's where you will draw the strength to finish strong.

A teacher told me the other day that she just felt like making fun stuff with kids. Do it! Instead of trying to contain the bubbling building of energy that comes with the approach of summer - use it to end the year building relationships, just as you began it.

Constraints are essential when energy is high, but do something with the energy...go outside and play a game together. Take a walk around the property. Do a little dance....

Ultimately, don't cheat yourself out of the celebration. You did wonders with your students this year. No one will appreciate that more than you. Take the time to soak in the glory.

A group of first grade students lined up to play
'Bus Stop'...day after day!
I've seen this in other classrooms with other kids.
This Beat performance really influenced kids!

Cheers!
Renaissance Secondary has been approved.

and...

our one and only...

Debra Rabideau....

has been chosen to be the Principal of this new school!

(Wild cheering and clapping!!!)

(speaking to oneself: Oh man, I'm so happy for her! And...so sad for me! What will I do without her?!)

There is much to be discovered, decided and planned for the next steps for Renaissance Secondary. Debbie will be with us, in her current role, through our first semester - and then, we'll just see where things are at.

Congratulations Debbie!!!
They selected the absolute best!

Hiring Update:

The hiring is complete!

We have hired Mike Hillen for third grade. Mike is currently an experienced Douglas County teacher and wildly excited to join our school.

So to recap:
We have hired Teresa Littrell for our 2/3 Discovery position
Samantha Burns for third grade
Mike Hillen for third grade

Michelle Wright was assigned to Renaissance as our School Psychologist and she will be with us on Tuesday's of each week. Michelle sent me a little note to share with all of you:

Hi,
I am Michelle Wright and I am looking forward to joining the wonderful staff at Renaissance Elementary. I have been working in Douglas County School District for the past four years as a school psychologist at Redstone Elementary.
Prior to that, I worked as a school psychologist through BOCES and before that I was a bilingual teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District in California.
I have been married to my husband Steve for 21 years and we have three teenage boys. Ethan (18) and he will be attending UCCS next year, Cam (17) and he will be a senior next year and Matt(14) and he will start high school in the fall. I love spending time reading and traveling and hanging out with my boys. I can't wait to get to know the staff, students, and community of Renaissance Elementary. I also will be working at Castle Rock Elementary for 3 days and one day with pre-schools. My e-mail is mmwright@dcsdk12.org

Update on Noreene and Sara:

Noreene has moved to the Parker Life Center of Stonegate. She isn't sure just when she will return home, but hoping that it will be soon. She loves to have visitors. The rehab center address is: 15720 Garden Plaza Dr. Parker, CO. Once she is home, she'll need some assistance with meals, errands, and company!

Sara came through her surgery fine. She's at home and doing physical therapy which she will be doing twice a week all summer. She stopped by the school today so she is definitely up and around. She's being a 'good patient' and following all the instructions. I could tell she was excited to be walking with a knee that works. Yeah Sara!

Team Effort

This afternoon, two boys in fourth grade deliberately left the building from the boys bathroom. They were missed immediately and the hunt was on. I want to thank everyone who supported locating the boys, who I found walking the sidewalk in the neighborhood off of Woodlands. In spite of our best procedures to keep this from happening, if a student wants to exit the building, it can be done. The police were called. Parents were called and numerous staff stepped up to support locating the boys. Everything at the building level was handled calmly and with expertise. It's always a good reminder of why our procedures are so critical and allow us to know immediately if a student is missing. Thanks for your diligence every day to adhering to our protocols for safety.

Hiring Update:
This afternoon, Teresa Littrell, accepted the 2/3 Discovery teaching position. Teresa is a teacher in Douglas County and brings a wealth of experience, expertise, passion and sunshine to our Crew.
We have a third grade teaching position yet to fill. It is my sincerest hope to find the right candidate within the next few weeks so I can formally share information with our community.

Hard to believe that a week ago I was shoveling over a foot of snow!
How wonderful that spring weather is with us.

Have a great weekend!
